The bloody, raw meat was tantalizing her; calling to her. She hated it and yearned for it all at once.
Stop, she ordered. What are you doing?!
So hungryyyyy, snarled a primal voice deep within her.
Don’t you dare! she screamed back.
But the primal hunger ignored her pleas and took over her body, forcing her rational voice deep within the crevices of her mind.

What would you do if you discovered you weren’t human? That you turned into a bloodthirsty monster against your will?
What if your instincts, emotions and desires were torn between your own and the dark, dangerous animal lurking inside of you?
If it could make you yearn for someone you shouldn’t, make you say and act in ways you wouldn’t and overwhelm your whole existence?
If everything you’d ever known about your life was a lie?

In a world where a deeply hidden community is swathed in mystery, deadly secrets, betrayal and murder, Jaz Barker struggles to fight against the dangerous Beast within her and the emotions and desires it thrusts her way.

When tensions ride high and people she cares about are put in danger, she will have to decide how much of her newly awakened animal-side she’s willing to let in.

And if it is worth the risk…

“For the fourth round, the judges have decided that the two opponents must face each other in their Beast form, starting now!”
The crowd drowned out his rumbling voice and went manic.
Jaz stared in disgusted awe as Kain’s body contorted and twisted and crunched until he turned into a Beast. His roars and howls were spine-chilling, sending shivers through every inch of her. But she realized her reaction wasn’t because of him.
Something was wrong with Nik.
“Why isn’t he Changing?” Alf barked. “Why the fuck isn’t he Changing?!”
Jaz gaped at Nik who was standing completely still. Kain’s spine cracked and dark brown hair began pushing through his skin, covering his Changing body. His jaw crunched as it lengthened.
“He can’t Change,” she uttered in a low voice, mostly to herself. The air in her lungs suddenly felt like a ball coated in spikes.
“He can’t bloody Change! He must be too weak!” She clamped her hands to her mouth just as Kain lunged straight for Nik.
Before she knew what she was doing, she jumped forward, tripping over the thigh-high barrier. She felt Alf’s hand whip past her, missing a grip on her arm before she saw the sand floor of the arena below her, rushing towards her. She held out her hands just in time to try to soften the fall before she slammed into the ground; the wind was knocked out of her and she grunted.
Half the crowd turned in her direction, some pointing at her, the other half who hadn’t yet seen her still had their eyes glued to the cage. She cocked her head up, saw the Beast’s teeth about to shred Nik’s shielding arm to pieces, when her view was blocked by someone’s back as they pounded towards the cage. One by one, five more Weres jumped down from behind her, dodging her as they raced towards the metal dome. She stared in bewilderment as two more sprang out from the barrier containing the pulsing crowd on the other side. The increase of Weres on the arena floor caused an uproar in the crowd and Judges Stand.
Jaz saw the two cage guards knocked out on the floor just before she felt an arm around her, yanking her to her feet. She wheeled round to face the cold, beautiful eyes of her enemy.
“Fraya!” she barked, teeth bared. Njord’s note had confirmed the feeling in her gut that the cold-hearted bitch standing in front of her had killed Lora and her unborn child. Jaz wanted to squeeze the life out of her and enjoy watching it. But the guilt-stricken look in Fraya’s eyes stopped her.
“Need a hand?” Fraya offered.
Jaz studied her suspiciously but urgency kicked her into action. She pushed her emotions aside, ignoring Fraya as she bolted across the sand floor, sprinting over and around Weres fighting and throwing punches at each other. She couldn’t tell who was with her or against her. She didn’t care. She just needed to see if Nik was alive.
Beast Kain was roaming around the cage, pacing back and forth. Nik was in the middle still standing and Jaz exhaled with relief. Alf was pushing others back from the cage. The wispy-haired judge was screeching into his microphone, calling for order.
It was then that the balls of fire shot out of nowhere.
Jaz screamed as one hurled in her direction. Those in front of her path ducked, and she dived to the side just in time. Then there was another from a different direction, coming from her left this time. She ran forward. Then came another, and another all being shot from guns fixed into the stone barrier just below the crowd. Jaz spotted square holes that had been opened for the guns to fire through, before she had to dive again.
The heat of the balls turned the arena into Hell itself. She ran towards the cage but was stopped in her path as more fireballs in quicker succession exploded out into the arena. The fireballs bounced off the wall of glass protecting the crowd. Jaz had no idea when or how the glass wall had appeared.
As she ducked down on the ground she noticed the balls of fire seemed to purposely miss the cage, aiming only at those who’d disrupted the fight. Some of the people dispersed as quickly as they could. But others weren’t so lucky.
Jaz cried out when a man next to her, not much older than she was, was hit in the chest by a fireball. He fell back screaming like a banshee. She jumped away, falling onto her butt as she gawked at him. His clothes were melted to his torso and the skin was burnt off like candle wax. He held his burnt flesh, and it was then Jaz saw the enormous hole in his body; his intestines, stomach and liver burnt away; his spine was visible, charcoal black and smoking. She sagged over her bent knees, clutching her stomach as the unbearable stench made her retch.
He was gasping as his hands scrambled around his stomach, as if trying to hold himself together. More skin slid away like red-hot melted cheese from his touch. And then he held up his burnt hands screaming because he’d rubbed away the flesh and muscle from them, leaving nothing but charred bone. Then he gurgled as he choked on his own blood, unable to breathe.
Jaz sprang to her feet, holding her hand to her mouth. Her eyes widened to saucers when she saw the fireball hurtling towards her. Before she was a human barbecue, someone knocked her down from behind and the fireball flew past her, hitting the wall.
She swung round to find Fraya again. She should have shoved Fraya into the path of a fireball but the horror of what she’d seen stupefied her. She peered down at the dying man and saw he was no longer moving. The foul stench and smoke in the air made her cough and her eyes burn.
“Go!” Fraya bellowed, shoving her up.
Jaz jumped to her feet, avoiding the charred bodies, dodging the one-on-one combats still going on despite the raging fireballs shooting out. She wanted to scream at them to get out of there, but she needed them to be distracted because she knew at least half of them would try and stop her. Fraya was the first to try as she yelled at Jaz to come back, before Jaz pulled open the enormous bolt on the door of the cage and jumped in.

Author Interview2

Q: How are you feeling now that your latest book is out & on tour?

So excited! And humbled. I feel now that I should appreciate every moment but not let it get to my head. I want to enjoy writing and getting my book out there. I don’t ever want to feel stressed out about the success I wish I have but don’t. Doing this tour and everything I’ve done so far has made me realize that success should be gradual and you should enjoy it at a steady pace. So for this tour, that’s exactly what I’m gonna do. I’ve never done a blog tour before, I mean not for my own book. I’ve organized tours for other people and hosted for them. It’s kind of funny being on the other side of the curtain.

Q: Out of all of your books do you have a favorite character or couple?

I love Alf. He’s the likeable character in my book and he went from being a minor character to a major role. His role will unfold and deepen the more I write.
As for favourite couple. Well, it has to be Nik and Jaz. I just love their chemistry, their arguments and their moments of peeling back the false emotions and just being themselves around each other. Accepting what they want from one another. It’s so fun to write.

Q: Are you currently working on a new book at this time?

Several! I have two I’m writing side-by-side and then there are other works I’m planning. Beasthood 2 which is called ‘Beast of Burden’ is one of them. The other novel is a paranormal/thriller called ‘Jinn & Curses’. I started writing that six years ago and it’s gone through several edits and drafts. It needs to be finished. And it’s the first novel I’m writing in American English. I decided to do it that way because the MC is from South Carolina and it just seemed right.

Q: How do you go about creating the most “Swoonworthy” character?

I tend to make my ‘swoonworthy’ hero complex, haunted, real. I like it when he’s got faults. When he’s a bit stubborn or hot-headed. When he likes to be sarcastic or is as grumpy as sin. But then the more you get to know him, the more he lets you in and reveals more than he would to anyone else. It’s nice to peel back layers. People appreciate the complexity and depth of my characters. They say it makes them real. And a lot of women like a guy with problems. It makes him sexy somehow.

Q: As a child what did you want to do when you grew up?

I actually want to be an actress. When I write books, I write them as if they’re a film in my head. And readers have said the same after they’ve read it. I was always good at Drama in school and I think that helps with my character interaction and dialogue. They’re probably my strongest suits in writing.

Q: When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

When I read the definition of what an author is: a writer of a book, article, or document. That’s what I am. There are people who assume that getting published by a Publishing house is when you’re officially an author, but I disagree. And so does the dictionary.

Q: Do you read all the reviews for your book(s)?

I try to avoid reading reviews now. I may stop off and have a peek, and if I see a really good rating I’ll have a look. But you get this sickness in your stomach when you see two and one star reviews. I’ve been told by seasoned authors and friends that you have to develop a thick skin before getting into writing. There will be rejection and haters. You can’t please everyone. And it’s a beautiful thing. Why would you want to please everyone? It’s nice to have variation. But it doesn’t mean I want to read about it.

Q: Which do you prefer paperback, hardback or ebooks & why?

I like hardbacks to look at but not to read. They’re heavy for one, and I’m always worried that I’ll damage the spine or bend the pages. I like books to look brand new. So hardbacks are better looking pretty on my bookshelves. I prefer paperbacks over ebooks. There’s just something quaint and lovely about holding a paperback in your hand over a tablet or iPad. I mainly read ebooks, but if there are books I love enough to buy in paperback, I will.

Q: Of all of the books you have written do you have a favorite & why?

I guess it depends on my mood. I really like my short story Kizzy. It’s a horror and so many people have compared it to Carrie by Stephen King. When I wrote it, I hadn’t seen the film or read the book. I still haven’t read the book yet, but I watched the new film version a few days ago and having seen it, I agree with my readers. It was a spur of the moment thing and only three pages long, but I love it.
Beasthood will always have a big place in my heart because it’s my first published novel. And I don’t think I will ever have a favourite book. But each novel I love for different reasons. I hope I never have a novel I regret writing.

Q: When you aren’t writing what do you do to relax and have fun?

I love to read, watch films, exercise (I recently bought a wii so have been playing around on that), cycling, going to the beach, spending time with my daughter. I like going places and trying new things but don’t get much chance to do it at the moment. I also love being online, blogging, designing graphics. I paint when I can too.

Okay now some fun ones:

Q: What are your favorite types of heroines?

Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why? I like a girl who is a bit of both. Someone who accepts when they need to be saved, and appreciates it. Maybe fights it a little but humbly accepts the help. And a girl who knows when to say it like it is, stands up for herself and those she loves. Someone who fights even if they lose, and doesn’t give up.

Q: What is or was your most embarrassing moment or the craziest thing you have ever don’t?

Come on you can’t hold out on everyone. LOL. Oh god, plenty. Performing on stage for the talent show. It was just cringeeeee. My countless clumsy moments of falling down stairs, over a wall (yeah, I know), bashing into a wall. I was at laser quest, and it was dark. The wall was black. That’s my defense and I’m sticking to it.

Q: Do you have a favorite love scene from a book or movie? Which book/movie & scene?

I love all the classics film/TV remakes. Jane Eyre, Austen etc. Where they confess their undying love after so much toil. It’s beautiful. I love the oldies from the 50’s to 80’s. I like the grungy teen 90’s movies. I can’t just name one that I love. But oddly enough, the scene that sticks into my head isn’t a love scene between a couple, but a daughter and father. Hope Floats with Sandra Bullock. She goes to visit her father who suffers from Alzheimers. She’s just had an humiliating divorce from her husband (after finding out he had an affair with her best friend on LIVE TV!) and she goes back home. Her father doesn’t remember her, which she knew he wouldn’t, so she’s chattering away, trying to cover up the fact she wants to cry any moment. He sees right through her and holds out his arms for a hug. She embraces him and they sway around dancing slowly. The two of them are replaced by a younger version of her father and her as a girl, dancing, like a memory, and then it melts back to them in the care home. It always makes me cry. Every girl needs their daddy’s hug.

How about a little of This or That

Coffee or Tea? Tea. I’m well known for my dislike of coffee.
Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate hmmmmm.
Kinky or Sweet? Sweet. Kinky comes later.
Tall, dark & handsome or blonde, surfer type? Definitely TDH. But I have no set taste in men.
Dine in or Dine out? I like both, but dine in overall.
Sunset or Sunrise? Sunrise. I don’t see many of them but the smell in the air and the peacefulness of it is amazing.
Steak or Chicken? Steak.
Cats or Dogs? Cats.
Dom or Sub? A bit of both.
Summer or Winter? Winter.
Shower or Bath? Shower.
Beer or Wine? Neither. I don’t drink. 🙂
Scary or Comedy? Scary.
Biker or Billionaire? Biker.
Thong or Comando? LOL! That’s for me to know.
Rock or Country? Rock.
Vanilla or Toys? I’m confused. What?
Pink or Black? Pink.

  1. If I found out I wasn’t human and had a beast inside me wanting to eat bloody things contoiling me at it’s whim, I’d panic. It sounds like Jaz is tough though, and will sort things out. Maybe too late for Fraya though! LOL
