Soundtrack2

Can you share your idea of the perfect soundtrack to Secrets of a Dangerous Woman with us?

Funny you should ask!

When Secrets of a Dangerous Woman begins where Vicki’s Key left off, Vicki and Dylan have been separated and things hadn’t been left on a positive note between them. But Vicki is still passionately in love with the charming, handsome Irishman.

When she drives from her home to Fort Bragg’s CIA office, she thinks she’s turning on the radio – but finds that Dylan had left a CD in the car’s player of their favorite romantic songs.

She is reminded of him as she listens to:

“Just the Two of Us”, sung by Grover Washington, Jr. and Bill Withers. Now that she’s alone (but not for long) she remembers how close they were when it was “just the two of us”.

“Holding Out for a Hero” sung by Bonnie Tyler capture Vicki’s feelings toward Dylan – he is the hero she’s been yearning for.

A third song on the CD is “Superman” sung by John Ondrasik; both Dylan and Vicki find it isn’t easy being who they are, especially as Vicki’s CIA past catches up with her and Dylan’s mysterious past splits them apart.

When Vicki arrives home later that day, she puts the CD in her bedroom player. But of course, I couldn’t keep Vicki from her handsome Irishman for long – he appears that same night, and they remain together throughout the series.

Character Bio2

Can you share a short history/bio on each of the main characters from Secrets of a Dangerous Woman?

Brenda Carnegie has a secret… many secrets, as it turns out.

Separated from her older sister Vicki Boyd when their parents were killed in an airplane accident, Brenda grew up in Robeson County, North Carolina. She is equally at home trudging through alligator-infested swamps as she is shooting a gun, tending a bullet wound, evading police—and committing computer crimes.

Brenda is an opportunist, especially when it comes to hacking into websites and secure databases, participating in shell companies and cybercrime, and amassing a fortune that must, for her own preservation, be held in off-shore accounts and out of the reach of the United States government. She’s quick, she’s street savvy, and she’s often sexually charged.

She also doesn’t trust anyone. She prefers the dark side, living life on the edge, moving through her life alone and capable of changing her plans on a moment’s notice. She has a very high tolerance for pain which holds her in good stead on many a gritty occasion.

She made her first appearance in Exit 22 when her partner-in-crime is murdered by a hired assassin—and the hitman comes after her. But her real secrets begin to spill in Secrets of a Dangerous Woman—secrets that reach to the highest levels of government and beyond, and which could very well get her killed.

And if the Black Swamp Mysteries series was made into a movie, who would play Brenda Carnegie? My pick would be Lindsay Lohan, who could play this bad girl very well.

Christopher Sandige is an anti-hero, a guy who is more at ease behind a desk constructing political strategies for his Congressman boss than he is running for his life through alligator-infested swamps with Brenda Carnegie.

He told himself he didn’t want a woman, a marriage, a typical family life in the suburbs. His hours were long and often began with coffee at his desk and ended with pizza delivery to the office. All that changed when he met Brenda.

The woman awakened in him desires he didn’t think he had—a longing to be with her, a need for romance, a desire for intimacy, an urge to protect her—even when he knew she was quite capable of protecting herself. He’d never really had eyes for anybody other than Brenda and though he knows she is dangerous, he can’t seem to tear himself away from her.

Dreamcast2

If Secrets of a Dangerous Woman was made into a movie and you could cast anyone you wanted, who would you cast?

There’s Vicki Boyd, the CIA psychic spy who is the “good girl”, the one who always tries to stay inside the lines. When I think of Vicki, I always picture Amy Adams.

Vicki’s sister, Brenda Carnegie, is just the opposite: a computer genius but a bad girl, one who prefers to tread on the dark side, the one who loves danger and who can be sexually charged. I know Lindsay Lohan would do an awesome job.

The charming, handsome Irishman Dylan Maguire is more difficult to cast. Black hair, hazel eyes, muscular, romantic, kind and caring but a CIA operative who can kill when necessary—Dylan’s character is intentionally complex. Eduardo Verastegui could definitely do him justice, if he could master the Irish accent.

Christopher Sandige is an anti-hero; a political strategist more accustomed to a desk than murder; tall, wiry, brown hair and expression-filled eyes. A romantic, hopelessly in love with Brenda even though he knows trouble is always half a step behind her. And yet, when the situation warrants it, he can shoot to kill, fight with the best of them… and keep Brenda under control. Tom Weston-Jones would be my pick.

Sam Mazoli is the CIA supervisor who manages Vicki and Dylan. Multi-faceted, he is gruff, he is no-nonsense, he’s the kind of boss that can have employees quaking. He can also be unintentionally funny and uncharacteristically surprising: the crotchety man who murmurs sweet nothings to his very feminine Persian cat, the brusque supervisor who frets over sick angelfish. There’s never been any doubt in my mind who should play him: Robert De Niro.

Excerpt2

Brenda turned to fully face Dylan and he found himself unable to tear himself away from her eyes. They were like liquid pools a man could drown in. She continued staring at him, expectantly waiting for his response.

“You shouldn’t keep me here, Irish,” she said. “It’s only a matter of time before he finds me.

You’re harboring a fugitive. You’ve got to know it carries serious consequences.”

“The last place they’ll be lookin’ is right under their noses.”

“Is that so?” She sounded unconvinced.

“They think you’ve gone to Washington, you know.”

“Is that what they think?” She cocked her head.

    “It is.”

“What would make them think that?”

    “Now, why do you think?”

They stared at one another for a long moment. He knew his brows were knit, his eyes narrowed, and he could feel his lips slightly turned down. But her face remained completely expressionless. She stared at him with neither malice nor friendship and though he felt as though his soul could be sucked into those amber pools and lost there, he couldn’t read what the woman behind them intended to do.

“You know,” he said slowly, his eyes moving from her eyes to her lips and back, “you
wanted to be seen on that camera.”

“What camera?” Her lips turned up slightly and one eyebrow rose.

He felt the heat rising in his cheeks and his brows knit tighter.

“Oh,” she said, perhaps sensing his mood, “that camera.”

“You wanted us to be searchin’ for you northward. And all the while you knew you’d be here.” She didn’t respond and after a moment, he added, “And these little games you keep playin’ with me are beginnin’ to foul m’ good humor.”

Playlist2

Can you share the playlist you listened to while writing Secrets of a Dangerous Woman with us?

I would love to share that with you, but I actually have a habit of not listening to music while I am working. I found that subconsciously, anything I listen to can make its way into my writing—whether it’s a turn of phrase or the pacing of a song.

So when I am writing, I want total silence. I can then close my eyes and conjure up the image that I need to have—and write without subliminal messages from other media interfering.

Top Ten2

Top 10 – Most Favorite Mystery Thriller Books (In Your Opinion)

I really enjoy romantic suspense so at the top of my list would be mysteries and thrillers that include tasteful romance.

1-4. I love Erin Quinn’s Haunting series. In Haunting Beauty, a young woman is transported from Arizona to Ireland and back in time – and as she falls in love with a charming, handsome Irishman, it becomes very clear that he died twenty years earlier. Now she must do the unthinkable: by going back in time, she must change his fate and keep him from dying. Can she do it? This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The next three books in the series – Haunting Warrior, Haunting Embrace, and Haunting Desire are in my Top Ten also.

5. Jeanette Baker had me enthralled with Irish Lady. I loved the history interwoven with the story, from the time of Henry VIII and the break from the Catholic church to more recent events chronicling the troubles between Northern Ireland and England. In the book, an attorney who escaped her turbulent Irish past must return to Belfast and defend a member of the IRA – a man she’d once been madly in love with, and who now is accused of assassinating a British politician.

6. I just finished Debbie Peterson’s book, Spirit of the Revolution, in which a young woman moves into an old home to find it haunted with the spirits of men who fought for America in the Revolutionary War. There are two mysteries in one: the secrets long hidden of the spirits’ last spy mission for George Washington, and the current suspense in which someone else will stop at nothing to discover the secrets locked hidden in the house.

7. The Mummy by Anne Rice takes place around the turn of the 20th century when a mummy is brought back to England from an ancient Egyptian tomb. As Ramses the Great comes to life, the woman who falls in love with him is in danger of losing her own life – and together, the human and the undead must uncover the plot that killed her father and placed her in danger.

8. I’ve found some of the best suspense can be found in true stories, such as Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, about the ill-fated quest of a group of men and women to reach Mount Everest and the sudden storm that took many of their lives – and changed others forever. From the first line on the first page, I could feel the desperation and the overwhelming odds against survival.

9. In keeping with true suspense, I loved Sebastian Junger’s The Perfect Storm. Set against the backdrop of one of the worst maritime storms in recorded history, it is the tale of men who make their living on the seas and the women who wait for them at home – and how average people can be pulled into extraordinary circumstances.

10. Stephen King’s The Shining kept me up at night, both from reading it – and from being afraid to close my eyes. Everything from the backdrop of the empty hotel to the ghosts within to the unraveling of a man’s mind were riveting.
